Mistral releases the open weights of Mistral Large 4
On October 29, 2026, Mistral released the weights of Mistral Large 4 (Le Chonk), a 1-trillion-parameter, natively multimodal model. Mistral says it ranks as the best open-weight model for coding, and that it was trained from scratch on European infrastructure.

On the Artificial Analysis Coding Agent Index, Mistral Large 4 scores 48%, effectively tied with the leading open-weight model, GLM-5.3, while using 47% fewer tokens per task on average.
It supports three reasoning modes. Mistral recommends Low for simple tasks (it replaces the None reasoning mode), Medium for everyday tasks, and High, the default, for the hardest use cases requiring high precision and thorough reasoning. Since High is the default, you have to choose Low or Medium yourself if you want one of them.
Organizations can inspect, customize and deploy the model on their own infrastructure, without depending on Mistral to serve it through an API. Besides the released weights, organizations that prefer a managed service can use Mistral Large 4 through Microsoft Foundry.
If you plan to use it commercially, read the license terms. Mistral Large 4 is available under the Mistral Ecosystem Open-Weight license, a modified MIT license. It is free to use, modify, fine-tune and commercialize, with one condition: businesses that operate a Model-as-a-Service offering must obtain a separate commercial license from Mistral before using the model commercially.
Our take:
start on Medium for everyday coding, and switch to High only for the hard bugs.
